Packing the dirt down inside his tent, Achan looked at the beautiful cloak and money and might have reasoned no one will ever know that I stole these things. Jericho had so many precious metals that no one will miss this tiny bit.
The Israelites attacked the city of Ai. But rather than conquer the city like they had with Jericho, the Israelites were defeated. Joshua sought the Lord and the Lord informed him that Israel had sinned, specifically Achan.
Achan, his children, and all his possessions were stoned to death. His sin affected not only himself but his family and the entire Israelite community (Joshua 7:20-26).
What we do behind closed doors will eventually be exposed in the open (Num. 32:23).
Our homes are meant to be a sanctuary where we “let our hair down” and relax. But our character should be the same no matter where we are. Are we the same person in private as we are in public?
Our families or roommates know us best. What would they say about us?
“I will pay attention to the way of integrity. When will you come to me? I will live with a heart of integrity in my house.” Psalm 101:2
Living with a heart of integrity refers to a blameless life. Being honest and pure in our thoughts and behavior at home and everywhere else. It doesn’t mean that we won’t ever mess up, but that when we do, we are quick to reconcile it and keep a clean slate with the Lord and others.
We are willing to do the right thing even if no one is watching and careful to avoid temptation areas. We follow God’s ways regardless of the cost and seek His Word for strength and wisdom.
Are we hiding sins that we think no one sees?
What false thinking are we using to excuse our sins? (I deserve this. I’m tired.)
Are we choosing God-honoring books, entertainment, and online sites?
Do we have a community where we can be authentic and accountable?
Are we cultivating an authentic relationship with Jesus or simply going through the motions?
May we be women of integrity behind closed doors and everywhere God sends us.
Which of these five questions do you need to work on? Or something else? What is one step you will take? Are we hiding sins that we think no one sees? What false thinking are we using to excuse our sins? (I deserve this. I’m tired.) Are we choosing God-honoring books, entertainment, and online sites? Do we have a community where we can be authentic and accountable? Are we cultivating an authentic relationship with Jesus or simply going through the motions?
